Firmamento (Heavens) is an immersive and interactive light installation that showcases a key element of Madrid’s urban landscape and collective imagination: the sky. Ropes descend vertically from the ceiling to the floor, creating a geometric structure that evokes a fragment of the cosmos arriving on Earth. Developed by Quiet Ensemble, in collaboration with the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO), specifically for its site under the glass dome of Cibeles Palace, in Madrid’s City Hall, it integrates the city’s sky into its institutional heart and creates a shared sensory experience.

Quiet Ensemble is a multidisciplinary creative studio founded in 2009 by Fabio Di Salvo and Bernardo Vercelli. It works to observe the balance between chaos and control, nature and technology to create audiovisual installations and performances based on the relationship between the organic and the artificial, focusing on seemingly insignificant yet wondrous elements such as the movement of a fly or the sound of trees.

Location

The Glass Gallery at Cibeles Palace is located in the heart of the former telecommunications complex designed in the early 20th century by Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi. Conceived as an expansive interior venue made of iron and glass, the gallery is laid out as a monumental empty space which filters the natural light of Madrid sky and emphasises the building’s verticality. Its transparent structure and size make the space a privileged setting for the juxtaposition of historical architecture and contemporary design.
