Time travel has always been a fascinating topic. The predestination paradox occurs when a time traveller becomes trapped in a loop of events that predestine him or her, precisely due to travelling between time periods.
Paradoxa is a journey into a time loop projected onto a building, in which we are transported to the past, present, future, and beyond. It is impossible know what this uncertain future holds for us. As the building is transformed, we are invited to reflect on our own futures… Can we change the future with our present actions? Or can we change our present by travelling back in time? Can we change the past?
Onionlab is a multidisciplinary studio. The team’s audiovisual installations and exhibitions work at the intersection of technology, design and art. Sound plays a vital role in their projects. On this occasion, the ambience soundtrack was composed by Unai Lazkano – ex-member of the famous group Delorean – and synchronised with the projection onto the building.
Location
Cibeles Palace: the former Telecommunications Palace and current seat of the Madrid City Council, it was built by Antonio Palacios between 1907 and 1919 and was home to the capital’s main post office, and the national telegraph and telephone head offices. Its 2011 renovation by Francisco Rodríguez Partearroyo and the Arquimática studio included a large glass gallery located on the former Pasaje Ruiz de Alarcón. This multipurpose space over 2,800 m2 is enclosed by a sophisticated glass dome made from 2,000 triangular panes of glass in a net-like structure.
