As part of LuzMadrid 2026, artist Rocío Asensi is opening her studio to foster an exchange between visual arts, design and architecture. Featuring pieces by Asensi herself, Candela Cort, Cachito Vallés, Laura Lis, Adriana Arronte and the Mayice collective (comprising Marta Alonso and Imanol Calderón), the curatorial project centres on the notion of the surface as a site of events: the surface touched by light and suffused with memory and time, light as image-time, and as a threshold to be crossed and a ritual to be experienced. This exploration resonates with the work of Rocío Asensi, a multidisciplinary artist who works with sculpture, installation art, photography, video and sound, using light as the primary tool for her art.

Organised by: Rocío Asensi and Edgar Ariel

STUDIO ENTRANCE:

ROCÍO ASENSI
Silver Lining
Sculptural installation featuring light, iron, mirror, water and textiles
2023

Silver Lining evokes the mysterious and magical side of life, that which we cannot see and which is related to the evolution of each one of us. We never know why things happen or where they might lead us.

CACHITO VALLÉS
Halo
Carbon steel, cellular polycarbonate, polyester, acrylic paint, ws2811 LED, customised electronics and software
2023

Halo is a light-based installation that translates the sky into time. Using a process of chromatic analysis, it extracts the “ideal” colour for each time slot and reproduces it within the space, synchronising with the daily cycle.

ROCÍO ASENSI
Arbol (Tree)
(with Silver Lining)
Light projection
2012

This light installation uses projection to create a contemporary graphic representation inside the space. It revives the symbol of the Tree of Knowledge, transforming light into a material that connects us to our origins and to the sacred. The design turns the surface in question into a threshold for reflection on our nature and collective memory, linking technology to the spiritual.

ROCÍO ASENSI
Lo aparente y lo oculto (The Apparent and the Hidden)
Iron and mirror light boxes with images
2004

Light boxes with police station mirrors contain family pictures which the artist uses to explore appearances and the influences that play a role in shaping our personalities.

HALLWAY:

CANDELA CORT
Tocado y luz (Headpiece and Light)

They are not lanterns, but entities permeated by light. A warm beam supports a phantom-like headdress. Three spheres throb on collars made of different materials. Light doesn’t illuminate: it grazes, reveals and lingers.

MAIN ROOM:

MAYICE
Kaen
2022

A brass piece is suspended in the air above a piece of continuous glass. The brightness varies depending on the reflections off the surfaces but also on the observer’s viewpoint, creating an atmosphere which arouses emotions.

MAYICE
No Title
White painted glass diffuser with 11W/MT 24V LED, 2700 K colour temperature and 1080 lumen/mt, dimmable
2021

A line of light hangs suspended in the air, creating different reflections on the glass which vary based on the observer’s perspective. It’s a form of expression that speaks to us of light, transparency, delicacy and fragility.

ROCÍO ASENSI
Constelaciones de agua (Water Constellations)
Brass, nickel and light
2022

Drawing inspiration from the shapes created by water droplets in nature, Rocío Asensi presents four lightweight sculptures suspended within the space. The pieces speak to us of vibrations, networks, interconnections and light.

ROCÍO ASENSI
Silencio (Silence)
Video projection and candlelight
2026

Inspired by observing animal herds in Namibia and their balanced and silent coexistence, this piece invites us to recover our lost natural rhythm and silence.

LAURA LIS
Altar a los cerebros huecos (Altar to Empty Brains)
Candle
2025

The altar to empty brains is a metaphor for the idea of success in contemporary societies.  How does one reach the top? What is that supposed top? Who reaches it? Who governs us?

ROCÍO ASENSI
You Have Time
Photographic light box
2009

Through imagery and an encrypted message that appears with the light, this piece conveys the importance of considering what kind of life we want to live, of exploring our deepest dreams and how to overcome our fears in order to achieve them.

ROCÍO ASENSI
Lámpara de Aladino (Aladdin’s Lamp)
Video projection with brass sculpture

2012

This piece consists of a brass sculpture attached to the wall next to a smoke-shaped video projection. Emerging from the lamp are distorted images of contemporary society, its injustices and imbalances.

ADRIANA ARRONTE
Futuro luminoso (Bright Future)
Lamp components, medical accessories, light bulbs, glass, resin and metal
2024

In this piece, Adriana Arronte reflects on light, its symbolic nature—guide, truth, full awareness—and the dystopias in doctrines or systems which stand as absolute reasons.

ROCÍO ASENSI
Paraíso en sombra (Paradise in Shadow)
Iron and light sculpture
2012

In the East, shadow represents beauty; in the West, fear. Paraíso en sombra (Paradise in Shadow) is a piece of cut iron inspired by Eastern lamps, a work that reminds us of what we have left behind and shows us the way back.
