Gigantic, glowing white bunnies have invaded cities all over the world. What’s going on? Amanda Parer is the principal creative and founder of Parer Studio. In her native Australia, rabbits were introduced by colonists in 1788. This wild pest has caused a great imbalance to the country’s endemic species, leaving behind a trail of ecological destruction wherever it goes.
On the other hand, in Parer’s eyes the rabbit also represents a contradiction: these fairy-tale animals from our childhood – a furry innocence, frolicking through idyllic fields. Intrude deliberately evokes this cutesy image with visual humour to lure visitors into the art, only to reveal the more serious environmental messages in the work. The spectacular size of the sculptures references “the elephant in the room”: our impact on the environment is undeniable yet, despite how big this issue is, we are still able to ignore it.
Location
Puerta del Sol: today it is the Casa de Correos building that presides over this square. Originally the location of one of the gates into Madrid in the 15th century, the Puerta del Sol we know today is the result of a large restoration project in the 19th century. This linear space faces towards sunrise and sunset, hence its name “Gate of the Sun”. Since 1950 it has been home to Spain’s Kilometre Zero, the starting point for the country’s arterial roads.
